A Brief History of Women’s Right to Vote

For Women’s Equality Day, we wanted to look back at the history of women’s right to vote in America. So we created a timeline using each of our VOTE collection shoes to mark voting rights milestones past, present, and future. It’s been a long journey, and there is still work to be done, but together we can go far when we each step up and vote.

Exactly 100 years ago (August 26, 1920), the 19th amendment was adopted to the U.S. Constitution, federally granting women the right to vote. While this date marks an important moment in history, there was still a lot of work to be done. It took decades before all women, particularly of color, gained the right to vote.

These colorful stars are a symbol of women’s suffrage, and our version represents the continued journey towards equal voting rights. The Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, prohibited racial discrimination in voting and represents a landmark piece of federal civil rights legislation.

The word “empowered” embodies what the right to vote means for each of us as individuals. Today, we continue the fight against voter suppression because all voices deserve to be heard.

It’s always important to use our voices by voting. We must help raise awareness and encourage all women to register to vote in this year’s elections.

The future is female. These words, along with the other words and phrases on this shoe design, represent messages of equality, strength, and unity, and they remind us of the possibilities that lie ahead.
