Next Water delegates have the exclusive opportunity to see Australia’s largest smart blue-green infrastructure R&D project in action.

Located in Bicentennial Park in a 40 hectare, fully irrigated parkland in Sydney Olympic Park, the SIMPaCT project – Smart Irrigation Management for Cool Parks and Towns – is working to reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect by maximising the transpiration cooling provided by plants. The project uses smart sensing technology and artificial intelligence to optimise irrigation of the entire parkland.

The technology is designed to create an autonomous natural urban air conditioning system that knows when it will be hot and how to adjust water management throughout a complex landscape to cool the area inside and around the park.

Led by Western Sydney University, SIMPaCT is funded by the Digital Restart Fund of the NSW Government and Sydney Water, and brings together universities, government agencies and industry.

Next Water, Australia’s leading scientific and technical conference on research and innovation, will be held in Sydney on February 22nd and 23rd. The event will bring together water industry professionals and academics from across Australia.

Register now for Next Water to take advantage of this exclusive opportunity and join the lunch hour walking tour where SIMPaCT project partners will demonstrate how science and industry are working together to deliver innovative and effective urban cooling solutions.

The tour is strictly limited to 50 delegates to ensure maximum participation. If you have already registered for Next Water please email Jessica Burgess to add the walking tour to your ticket, free of charge.

Water Research Australia has commenced 2023 with the addition of two new Directors to its Board.

A new Industry (Utility) Director, Renee Ingram from Sydney Water, has replaced Steven Porter from Northern Territory’s Power and Water, who stepped down from the Board in September 2022. Renee will serve until the AGM in October 2023.

Renee Ingram is the Head of Western Sydney Development at Sydney Water, working alongside, and partnering with government agencies, developers, and businesses to help forge a liveable and sustainable approach to water servicing for Western Sydney.

WaterRA has also appointed a new Independent Director Collene Castle as part of our commitment to bring First Nations people’s perspectives to all that we do, including decisions at the Board table where our strategy is set and our performance monitored.

Collene is a Menang Gnudju yok from Western Australia. Through her work as Director with Wonnil Partners, Collene passionately supports businesses across WA to deliver reconciliation initiatives. Collene also has a long history in leading successful training and employment outcomes for First Nations people. She was the recipient of the 2022 NAIDOC Perth Outstanding Achievement award through her work with Water Corporation leading reconciliation and First Nations engagement and employment outcomes.

WaterRA CEO Karen Rouse congratulated the new Directors on their appointments to the Board.

“We are pleased to welcome Renee and Collene to our Board,” she said. “They join a strong, committed and passionate group of individuals.

“Each director brings a diverse range of skills, expertise and experience ensuring diversity of opinion and a strategic direction which is beneficial for our BIG Team and encourages interconnectivity across the sector.”

The Water Research Australia project team have selected the University of Wollongong to deliver research project that will review performance data from a broad range of operating Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) facilities in Australia to understand the pathogen Log Reduction Value (LRV) performance in relation to operating conditions and monitoring parameters.

A range of membrane age and performance will be targeted. Project partners include NSW Health, South East Water, Sydney Water, Permeate Partners, Ballina Shire Council, Gippsland Water, Hunter Water, Dupont, and Suez. Data analytics will be an important feature of this project, and incorporate signs of loss of integrity into the data set. This will allow researchers to better understand indicators of integrity and better predict when membranes may begin to decrease in performance.

The research contract is currently being finalised and a kick off meeting has been planned for later this year.

For further information, please contact Marlene Hsu, WaterRA Research Manager.
