Water Research Australia PhD Candidate Sarah Aucote has been awarded the Student Water Prize at the AWA’s SA Gala Dinner & Awards Night.

A collaboration between WaterRA, SA Water and the University of Queensland, Sarah’s project is titled Quantification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Sludge-Drying Lagoons and Strategies for Methane Emission Mitigation.

Sarah completed a Bachelor of Science specialising in Biotechnology at Flinders University. Her Honours research with SA Water on the microbial risk assessment of source water prompted her interest in the microbiology of water science, and lead to her industry-based PhD on wastewater GHG emissions.

Congratulations Sarah!

Nominations are open for the state-based Research and Development Excellence Awards offered by the Australian Water Association.

This award recognises projects challenging current practice to address the need for a sustainable future. Project outcomes must demonstrably add to the conservation or better use of water resources, knowledge of water technology, environment, sociology, economics or culture.

As leaders in collaborative water research, Water Research Australia supports innovation in the sector through long-term sponsorship of both the national and state-based Research and Development Excellence Awards.

WaterRA’s sponsorship will continue for the next three years, recognising research and development that has made a significant contribution to the water sector.

Entry for the R&D Excellence Award is at a state or territory level with nominations now open across most states in Australia. The awards are announced annually at events around the country calumniating in the awarding of the national R&D Excellence Award at the Ozwater’23 conference in Sydney.

“Research is the core of what we do and the foundation for innovation and growth in the sector,” WaterRA CEO Karen Rouse said. “We are delighted to be able to recognise the outstanding research that will take place across Australia now and into the future.”

Water Research Australia was a proud sponsor of the 13th IWA Specialist Conference on Wastewater Ponds and Algal Technologies.

Held in Melbourne from July 3rd to 6th, the event provided a forum for the international research community, water utilities and water professionals to present and discuss the latest developments in the application of pond systems to wastewater treatment and the use of algae for resource recovery and production of added value products using wastewater as the growth medium.

WaterRA CEO Karen Rouse was pleased to acknowledge the Best Poster Presentation and Best Oral Presentation award winners during the event.

Best Oral Presentation was awarded to Dr Franja Prosenc from the University of Slovenia for her presentation on Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Algae-based Treatment; and the Best Poster Presentation went to Eva Salgado from the University of Porto, Portugal for her poster on Microalgal Cultures for the Bioremediation of Urban Wastewaters in the Presence of Siloxanes.
