Nominations are open for the state-based Research and Development Excellence Awards offered by the Australian Water Association.

This award recognises projects challenging current practice to address the need for a sustainable future. Project outcomes must demonstrably add to the conservation or better use of water resources, knowledge of water technology, environment, sociology, economics or culture.

As leaders in collaborative water research, Water Research Australia supports innovation in the sector through long-term sponsorship of both the national and state-based Research and Development Excellence Awards.

WaterRA’s sponsorship will continue for the next three years, recognising research and development that has made a significant contribution to the water sector.

Entry for the R&D Excellence Award is at a state or territory level with nominations now open across most states in Australia. The awards are announced annually at events around the country calumniating in the awarding of the national R&D Excellence Award at the Ozwater’23 conference in Sydney.

“Research is the core of what we do and the foundation for innovation and growth in the sector,” WaterRA CEO Karen Rouse said. “We are delighted to be able to recognise the outstanding research that will take place across Australia now and into the future.”

Water Research Australia’s Research Manager Marlene Hsu presented on our Extreme Events research at the 2022 ACT Water Matters Conference.

The 2019-20 bushfire season in Australia was unprecedented in its extent, duration, intensity and impact on the natural environment and human livelihoods. Periods of intense rainfall, particularly following a bushfire season, presented water managers with challenges at both the catchment and treatment plant scale.

Marlene shared the work that WaterRA’s members have been doing to increase the water industry’s future readiness – research designed for professionals to be able to plan, prepare, respond to, and recover from extreme events.

“In times of drought we are faced with the uncertainties of variable water quality and quantity,” Marlene said. “An acute understanding of these scenarios will help us to build a resilient water future.”

WaterRA’s series on Extreme Events was held during November 2021 and February 2022. The webinars took a close look at modelling, climate, complex river systems, community attitudes, extreme event response, and recovery among other important topics.

A WaterRA BIG Team congratulations to our Research Manager, Dr Arash Zamyadi, for successfully completing The Peter Cullen Water and Environment Trust Science to Policy Leadership Program.

Arash was selected to participate in this prestigious program, designed to create long-term impact and change for Australia’s water and environment managers, by enhancing their opportunities to take up leadership roles and proactively contribute to a sustainable world.

The program saw 17 water leaders given the task to “describe the nature of water policy development from a systems perspective and highlight the leadership actions that make for successful policy development and implementation”.

As a group they recognised that Australian water policy has been developed within the confines of western ideology and chose to challenge the task, and challenge themselves to better understand how, as leaders, they can work to bring traditional knowledge into the process of policy development and caring for water and country.

Beyond the program, the group has committed to walking with and for Traditional Owners, to find the courage to pursue opportunities that contribute to their purpose, and influence change.

Congratulations to Arash and all participants for completing the rewarding experience.
