Dementia Australia have welcomed guest speakers to record a specialised education video for you to access.
In this video we are joined by Dementia Australia dementia advocate Nell Hawe speaking about her experience being recently diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer's disease. Nell shares information to understand more about dementia and what help and supports are available. She shares her insight and some helpful strategies to support living positively and well with dementia. Nell is also joined by Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty speaking about the brain and the more commonly diagnosed types of dementia, offering further helpful strategies to live well.

Nell Hawe
Nell lives in Port Macquarie in NSW. She lives with her husband and adult son, with her daughter and precious grandchildren living interstate.
Nell is 54 years old and was diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer's disease in February 2020.
Nell has extensive experience and expertise over 30 years in the aged care and disability sectors before her recent retirement. She worked as a trainer and assessor for care workers and as a disability support specialist before her diagnosis. She has also worked as a youth officer in a juvenile detention centre.
Nell joined the advocates program at Dementia Australia just after her diagnosis in 2020 and is a very active member. She has been interviewed by Channel 7, 9, 10 & ABC News about her experience of diagnosis as well as Nights with Denis Walters, reviewed grant applications, been a guest speaker at a symposium for Centre for Research Excellence funded by NHMRC and has been involved in numerous UNSW projects including Advanced Care Planning for people living with dementia, amongst many other opportunities.
Nell says she ‘lives in the moment and surrounds herself with good people’ and reminds us to, “always be kind. . . because dementia is not.”
Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty AO
Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty AO MB BS MD DSc FRACP FRANZCP, FAAHMS is a researcher, clinician, policy advisor and strong advocate for people with dementia and their carers.
At UNSW Sydney, Australia, he is Scientia Professor of Ageing and Mental Health, Co-Director of the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, holds the Montefiore Chair of Healthy Brain Ageing and is the Director of the Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration. As well as being a prolific researcher, he is a senior psychogeriatrician within aged care psychiatry.
Professor Brodaty is the immediate past President of the International Psychogeriatric Association. He was a member of the Expert Advisory Panel for NHMRC National Institute for Dementia Care and has served on several New South Wales and Commonwealth committees related to ageing and dementia. Henry is also the past chairman of Alzheimer's Disease International, representing over 75 national Alzheimer Associations and past president of Alzheimer's Australia (now Dementia Australia) and Alzheimer's Australia (NSW).
Publishing over 500 papers and book chapters, Henry is on the editorial board of several journals and has been the recipient of a number of awards. Henry's lifetime achievements have been recognised by becoming an officer of the Order of Australia in 2000 and in June 2016 as recipient of the international Ryman Prize for the world’s best development, advance or achievement that enhances quality of life for older people.
