Dementia Australia have welcomed guest speakers to record a specialised education video for you to access.
In this video we are joined by Margaret Crothers, Manager of Advocacy and Regional Services at Seniors Rights Service, discussing what capacity and supported decision making means, what advocates do, and how they may assist you. Margaret is joined by Halil Ozbeyazli, Aged Care Advocate at Seniors Rights Service, sharing some different case scenarios which illustrate the work of an aged advocate in helping older peoples' voices be heard.

Margaret Crothers
Margaret is the Manager of Advocacy and Regional Services at Seniors Rights Service. Margaret started working life as a high school teacher, teaching mainly modern and ancient history. She loved teaching and still has a love for history. Margaret ran her own small business for a number of years, before taking up a position as an advocate in 2006, with what was then The Aged Care Rights Service, which later rebranded as Seniors Rights Service. Margaret now has the privilege of leading the fast-growing team of advocates who play a very important role in supporting and defending the rights of people accessing aged care.
Halil Ozbeyazli
Halil is an aged care advocate at Seniors Rights Service and lives in Western Sydney. Halil is a qualified Australian lawyer with a background in both the community legal sector and private legal practice, where he practised as a solicitor in litigation and dispute resolution at Dentons.
In addition to his legal qualifications, Halil also has a background in neuroscience where he conducted Honours research in the field of neuroimmunology and behaviour, investigating the effects of neuropathic pain on appetitive motivation.
Halil is passionate about standing up for the rights of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and is steadfastly committed to using his passion and his legal experience to guide and support older people in NSW with their aged care needs.
